We sing songs for babies and toddlers, both traditional well known english songs translated (Like the Wheels on the Bus) and some Spanish songs (Los pollitos).
I had my babies and was chosing from the myriad of songs available on YouTube. Some had american translations not english, some were barely recognisable, some were plain wrong and many were too fast. I decided to make my own. Over the last few years I have developed a collection of songs with accompanying powerpoints that we use in Spanish Songs. The children get used to the images, sounds and signs/actions we use and develop an understanding of the language, Many immediately recognise it is a different language and pay attention and in my opinion this enables to more actively differentiate sounds in english as well.
We sing the songs together and each song has accompanying pictures and lyrics on my laptop. The lyrics help the mums to join in so even if you don't speak Spanish when you start you will be able to sing Spanish by the time you leave! Some older children ignore the laptop completely whereas some begin to associate the pictures and words. Some sing along, and some flick through the books or play the instruments; they all absorb in their own way so don't worry if your child does his or her own thing!
We're a supportive, friendly group, have a laugh together and enjoy a cuppa afterwards. I ask parents to pay £4 for their first child, with sibling discounts available. It is £1.50 for extra adults (eg grandparents) just so I can cover the cost of their drink. A map of the venue is available below. Price includes a cup of tea/coffee.
We meet weekly at 10.30am in Kings Heath Park Tearoom (Cartlands Tea Room, in the conservatory) on Wednesdays.
